World Leaders Confirm to Attend PNG 50th Jubilee as PM Marape and Governor Parkop Plan Ahead

Up to 30 world leaders are expected to attend Papua New Guinea’s 50th Jubilee Independence celebrations, with Pacific leaders already confirming their participation, Prime Minister Hon. James Marape revealed in a statement.

“All Pacific leaders have given the indication to join us on 16 September as well. It will be a busy year for all of us right through. I urge our people to stay informed about announcements and upcoming activities," said PM Marape.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of unified efforts, and that activities will culminate in December 2025.

Major events include the launch of the PNG NRL team in February, which will align with school and youth programs, he said. August will feature a nationwide revival and reconciliation program organized by churches, including an event in Bougainville on August 30 to honor those who lost loved ones during the Bougainville crisis.

The PNG Games will be hosted in the Southern Highlands, with the National Capital District serving as a standby host. The games are scheduled to conclude in early September, allowing athletes to participate in the Independence Day celebrations.

Additionally, the Education Department will adjust the school calendar to accommodate these events, ensuring the participation of students and educators, the PM’s office said.

The events are set to boost the economy and promote tourism, setting an opportunity to promote the country’s products.

The Governor for NCD, Hon. Powes Parkop, reiterated his commitment to ensuring Port Moresby stands ready to host the nation and its guests.

“We are prepared to deliver a memorable experience for Port Moresby and Papua New Guinea,” he told PNG Business News.

A detailed program for the year, encompassing events, celebrations, and development initiatives, will be unveiled following the stakeholders’ meeting on January 6.

This collaboration between the National Government and the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) promises to mark PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary as a landmark event in the country’s history.

PM Marape and Governor Parkop said the milestone event, set to culminate on September 16, 2025, will feature year-long activities designed to commemorate the nation’s journey since independence.

Their preliminary meeting on January 2 between the National Government and the municipal government of Port Moresby preceded the full stakeholders’ meeting involving key representatives, such as Minister for National Events Hon. Justin Tkatchenko, and various agencies on January 6.

“Port Moresby will be the epicentre of this momentous year for our people and our country. It is vital that the National Government and our City’s municipal government are aligned to deliver a celebration befitting this historic occasion,” said Governor Parkop.

“We have prioritized an outstanding celebration and are ready to synchronize plans with the National Government. The city will be fully prepared in all aspects before the main celebrations in September,” added the governor.
