Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) Managing Director and CEO Kerry Ilimbit called for “meaningful change” in Western Province, emphasizing the need for improved governance, infrastructure, and economic participation for locals.
Mr. Ilimbit spoke at the launch of the Western Province Development Plan 2023-2027 on January 17 at Daru Oval, underscoring the responsibility of leaders and stakeholders to ensure development benefits reach the people.
Acknowledging the presence of provincial officials and international partners, Mr. Ilimbit stressed prioritizing community welfare in all initiatives.
“It’s for the people… If it’s not for the people, this piece of paper we’re preparing means nothing. Our place changes because of people — not because of politics or camps,” he said.
Mr. Ilimbit urged elected leaders to actively seek out opportunities to unlock resources and deliver essential services. He highlighted the role of OTML as both a development partner and a significant contributor to the province and its commitment to social and economic benefits.
“As the government partners Ok Tedi Mine tries its best to ensure the province benefits. With the extension of OTML’s operations, we are focusing more on social benefits, aiming to impact regions like South Fly, Delta, Middle Fly, and North Fly,” he stated.
“We have plenty of money flowing through this province, but unless there’s a change in behavior and participation, the province will not progress,” he said, stressing business participation through the CMCA (Community Mine Continuation Agreement) review process.
South Fly District and Delta Fly District share boundaries with Ok Tedi, as he specifically encouraged both district communities to engage more in economic activities linked to the mine.
Increased Funding Through Tax Credits
Highlighting the province’s reliance on the tax credit scheme, which allocates 2% of mine revenue for development projects, Mr. Ilimbit appealed to increase this allocation.
“Two percent is not enough for this province. Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Works, we believe Western Province deserves an additional 1%,” he said.
Noting OTML’s contributions to infrastructure projects, he called for partners to collaborate and realize the full development potential of the province.
Additionally, the OTML MD emphasized the need for reliable energy supply. While praising Sustainable Development Program (SDP) efforts to power Daru, he added: “Powering Western Province is another agenda we must prioritize.”
“It’s about using the resources we have wisely to implement meaningful changes while seeking additional resources. Together with the provincial government, leaders, and partners, we can make this province a better place for its people,” he concluded.
