Prime Minister Hon. James Marape and Cabinet on July 10, 2024 officiated the launching of the K221 million, 17km Tokua-Kokopo four-lane road construction in Kokopo, East New Britain.
He said this long-awaited project is part of the ‘Connect PNG’ programme focused on building economic corridors for the benefit of the people.
“By enhancing connectivity, this project can potentially boost local commerce, improve transportation efficiency, and contribute to the overall economic growth of the province and region, as a whole,” Prime Minister Marape said.
The Connect PNG programme aims to comprehensively enhance the nation’s infrastructure through a coordinated, multi-modal approach.
This ensures that various infrastructure components—be it roads, airports, wharves, schools, hospitals, and agricultural facilities—are synchronously developed to create an integrated and efficient network.
“Infrastructure projects like these often bring a range of benefits, including improved access to services, job creation, and enhanced opportunities for business and tourism,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“As highlighted by the Minister for Works and Highways, Hon. Solan Mirisin, road projects are
currently in progress across the country. More works are being planned and will commence soon.
“It is my privilege to officially launch the project for the design and construction of a new 12km, four-lane road between UMW Roundabout and Tokua Airport Carpark and the rehabilitation of the 5km existing four-lane road between Kokopo Secondary School and UMW Roundabout.
“This project will cost K221 million and we trust the contractor will deliver it within budget and strive to complete it ahead of schedule.
“The project has been in the pipeline for close to 30 years—reflecting the perseverance and
dedication of all involved to enhance the region’s development and connectivity.
“Ultimately, the Connect PNG programme has the potential to reshape the economic and social landscape of Papua New Guinea by fostering regional development, improving accessibility, and elevating the standard of living for many communities across the nation.
“This road is a significant development project for East New Britain Province and as construction continues from Kokopo City on to Rabaul, it will be renamed the Namaliu Highway.”
Prime Minister Marape also announced the Government’s presentation of K10 million to the East New Britain Savings and Loans Society to empower individuals to start-up small and medium enterprises.
