The PNG Forest Authority and the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at transforming and reforming the forestry sector. The MoU outlines key platforms for collaboration, including the review of forestry legislation, the regulatory framework for forest carbon, technical advice to promote downstream processing and market access to Australia, building capacity for timber testing and new forest products, and increasing technical support to the Forest Research Institute.
Forestry Minister Salio Waipo praised the Forest Authority management and board for their successful negotiations and highlighted the significance of the MoU. "The MoU is a partnership understanding between PNG Forest Authority and the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry which will promote, strengthen and implement the joint decision of both partners to maintain close cooperation to support the advancement of the forestry sector and the forest industries of Australia and PNG," he said.
Mr. Waipo emphasized the importance of the MoU as the beginning of a greater reform for the forest sector in years to come, stating that the MoU reflects the common shared values of promoting economic development in the region.
"This MoU will enable our countries to work together towards sustainable forest management, protecting the environment, and advancing the livelihoods of our people," he added.
In light of the MoU, it is clear that the PNG Forest Authority and the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry are committed to working together to ensure a sustainable future for the forestry sector in both countries.
