The Simbu Provincial Government has signed a K850,000 project agreement with the National Fisheries Authority to build a new training and office facility in Kundiawa.
More than 23,000 inland fish farmers in the province will benefit from the facility's basic instruction on how to manage and expand their fish farms.
The agreement will see NFA pay for half of the project's cost, with the remaining 40% going to the Simbu Provincial Government.
The remaining 40% will be paid by the government.
According to Justin Ilakini, Acting Managing Director, they are delighted to sign a collaboration agreement with one of the most important inland fisheries provinces in the Highlands and construct infrastructure to assist local fish producers.
After a memorandum of understanding was signed last year, Mr Ilakini said this is the first time a province has benefited from the arrangements.
“This is the kind of partnership that we encourage and would like to see happen, not only Chimbu but all other provinces that we have signed agreements with,” he said.
“We now have a 10-year strategic plan, and in the plan, we have set ourselves some key priorities for inland and agriculture fisheries in highlands.”
