GOVERNMENT MUST MAINTAIN ITS SOLIDARITY: PNGTUC

The Papua New Guinea Trade Union Congress (PNGTUC) and its affiliated women members have made a call to the Government to continue to remain intact to protect and promote the same solidarity and consistency shown during the unopposed election of Prime Minister James Marape and Speaker of Parliament Job Pomat when the 11th parliament rose to elect these two MPs.

For the second time, the two respective Members of Parliament were reelected unopposed by MPs who were present at parliament which also included the support of members from the opposition benches.

The National President of PNG Banks and Financial Institutions Workers Union, Ms. Killi Sapa expressed her sentiments towards the unity shown in parliament during the resumption of the first sitting of the 11th parliament and stressed that the solidarity and consistency shown must continue to be visible throughout the term of the 11th Parliament for the next five years.

“We call on the Government to maintain the same solidarity to have the people at heart when making decisions as we are living in high trying times with economic issues such as inflation, almost nil labour market growth, overcrowded classrooms, frustrated teaches and so many underlying issues that the country is currently facing. We need change, we need this country to be united and we need our leaders to believe in the same”. Said Sapa.

She further appealed to the citizens that now that they have elected their leaders, it is also time that their leaders must be held accountable. Leaders must be liable in terms of service delivery and basic services must become accessible especially to people in rural areas of the country.

Meanwhile, PNGTUC National Women’s Representative, Wilma Kosi appealed to the Marape-Rosso Government to truly represent the best interest of the people in their decision while representing them in office for the next five years.

“The current Government must bring economic growth through investment, reduce tax on workers and fix the current system” she said.
